Temple, TX — Recently, the Temple Police Department has received complaints that an old scam is beginning to resurface in the community.
Police say two Temple citizens reported receiving unusual telephone calls, in which a male suspect claimed a family member had been incarcerated. The caller claimed to be with a bonding agency or to be some other official charged with securing the release of the individual. A request was made for an amount of money, which was supposed to secure the loved one's release. This amount varied between $1,600 and $9,000.
The victim profiles and content of the calls were similar in both instances. However, when the victim stated they needed to verify the alleged arrest, the suspect claimed there was a “gag order” in effect. The suspect made this claim in an obvious attempt to deter the victim from conducting any follow up investigation.
Fortunately, neither of the two potential victims actually became victims of this con, but police felt it necessary advise all citizens that this is beginning to resurface in the area. Please pass this information to your parents, grand-parents, and great grand-parents.
