Temple Police find a suspicious package

At around 2 p.m. an administrative services employee was opening mail in the administration area of the central police building. A letter was received containing an threatening and vulgar communication directed toward an individual member of the department and a powdery substance.

The employee notified a supervisor who called Temple Fire and Rescue Hazardous Materials Unit.

As a precaution the first and second floors of the police station were evacuated for one hour and thirty minutes while the hazardous materials unit processed the substance.

Non emergency services were temporarily interrupted during the evacuation but services were unaffected by the incident.

The hazardous material unit found the substance to be an inert, nonhazardous material, but they took samples for more testing.

The Temple Police Department is conducting an investigation into the incident and will ask for help from members of the United States Postal Service Inspectors.
