In Texas, a husband and wife have been arrested and accused of kidnapping their adopted adult son and forcing him to live in a locked garage. On Wednesday, the Dripping Springs couple was arrested for abduction.

"You see stuff like this on TV, but never expect it to be so close to home," said a neighbor who asked not to be identified.

Forty-year-old Jenifer Thyssen and her husband 39-year-old Andrew Thyssen were accused of locking up their 22-year-old adopted son Koystya in this garage in an apartment by himself for years.

According to the arrest affidavit, a Hays County detective was investigating a burglary next door and Koystya was arrested after admitting he went through the garage and inside the house.

He told detectives he used a screwdriver to break out of the apartment next door where he was kept locked inside. The detectives got permission to then search his apartment and found a toilet, sink, fridge and microwave.

The arrest affidavit states all the windows were boarded up and the door to the apartment was locked from the outside. More than a week after the detective made his initial investigation there, the windows to the apartment are no longer boarded up.

The couple was arrested Tuesday after admitting they kept their adopted son locked in the garage to "protect their own five children." They only let Koystya out once a week to take a shower before seeing a counselor.

The couple said they checked on their son once a day and gave him a box of food once a week. It is not known what they were protecting their children from.
