Texas woman's life saved by her purse

A Houston woman is fortunate to be alive after an attack outside her home. She says two masked men tried to rob her and shot at her several times.

She was hit in the leg twice. But her purse deflected a bullet that could have easily killed her.

The victim says a man held her at gunpoint, "He was pointing a gun at me. i was looking down the barrel of a gun."

Just hours after being released from the hospital, Dollie O'Day sat down with us to talk about the night two masked men nearly killed her over her purse. "He said give it all to me. and I was just kind of going blank and so he grabbed for my purse," O'Day said. "He was pointing a gun at me. I was looking down the barrel of a gun."

It was around 2:15 Sunday morning. Dollie was coming home after spending the evening with one of her daughters and had just pulled into her carport. As she made her way to the back door of her townhome, she says the thieves immediately began attacking her and demanding she hand over her purse. But she says she wouldn't do it. "Oh, he had knocked me to the ground and he was dragging me around on the ground. i was just yelling, 'help me, help.'"

Seconds later, police say one of the robbers opened fire, letting off four rounds. And she was shot two places in the leg. One of the bullets could have hit her directly in the chest, but the 61-year-old grandmother says her purse acted as a shield.
"There's a bullet hole right there. And I think hanging onto the purse saved my life because I had it over my chest."

The suspects, according to witnesses, got away with the victim's iPhone, before jumping into a waiting get-away car.

As for Dollie, she continues to clutch the purse she believes saved her life. "Oh, I think there was a guardian angel watching after me."

Investigators say they hope a GPS tracker on O'Day's iPhone could help lead them to the suspects.
