Three Sam Houston State University students killed, one injured in wreck

Three Sam Houston State University students are dead and a fourth injured after a major car accident on campus.

It happened early Saturday morning on campus near the intersection of South Avenue I and Bowers Boulevard.

University officials say the single-vehicle, rollover accident killed: 19-year-old Blanca Espinal, 22-year-old Eric Torres and 20-year-old Alfonso Mata.

A fourth passenger, 23-year-old Thomas Roling, was transported to a nearby hospital.

The wreck is still under investigation.

Counsleors were on hand Monday for students greiving.

SHSU President Dana Gibson issued the following statement: “Our Bearkat Family is deeply saddened by the loss of our students in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to their family and friends during this difficult time.”
