BRYAN -- This week the Texas Department of Transportation is asking you to slow down through work zones while they observe the 13th annual "National Work Zone Awareness Week."
In 2010, 100 Texans were killed in car crashes that took place in a highway construction or maintenance zone and five of those work zone fatalities happened in the Bryan district.
So this week TxDOT is raising awareness and asking drivers to remember to slow down through work zones and put the distractions, like cell phones, away.
"Most of our men and women do work on the highway and that roadway is their office and so how would you like it if someone were barreling down the roadway gong 70, 75, 80 mph?" said Bob Colwell with TxDOT. "So we're just asking that you give us a break -- it's an old slogan we've always had."
Colwell adds that if you don't slow down through a work zone and you're ticketed for speeding, those fines will be doubled.
