KIEV, Ukraine (CNN) — It's been 28 years since Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear disaster and Ukrainians marked the anniversary Saturday with a vigil in the capital Kiev.
The nuclear disaster killed 30 people and hundreds of thousands of people had to be evacuated from their homes as radioactivity spread across Europe.
People gathered around a memorial to participate in a commemorative prayer service. Many of those attending were former workers at the plant themselves, while others there lost family members.
They held candles, laid flowers and a bell tolled once for each year since the disaster struck, in memory of the victims.
