Unidentified woman killed after tripping, falling on railroad tracks

A woman was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning after she was hit by a train just before midnight.

Officers were dispatched to the scene at around 11:43 p.m. A 911 caller told dispatchers that a woman had been hit by a train near 10th Street, according to the Killeen Police Department. The woman's body was found about 100 feet east of the area on the south side of the railroad tracks.

Investigators believe the train was heading eastbound near 10th St. when the victim tripped and fell while trying to cross the tracks. Crossing barriers were in the down position and red warning lights were flashing when the incident occurred, police said.

After the train ran into the woman, she was dragged for about 100 feet.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced her dead at the scene at 12:15 a.m. The victim's identity is unknown at this time.

Detectives continue to investigate this incident and information will be released as it becomes available.
