More than a dozen people were injured Sunday when gunmen opened fire at a parade in New Orleans, police said.

Remi Braden, a police spokeswoman, said that it appears 17 people were injured, including a young girl.

None of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening.

"This is an extremely unusual occurrence, and we're confident that we will make swift arrests," she said.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas told CNN affiliate WVUE that it appears "two or three people just, for a reason unknown to us, started shooting at, towards, or in the crowd."

He asked anyone with information to call authorities.

No suspects were in custody.

The shooting took place at the intersection of Frenchman Street and North Villere Street.
