KILLEEN, TX — UPDATE: The victims of Friday's apartment fire in Killeen have been identified as Kristy R. Moncrief, 33, Micheal Seth Soulsby, 19, and Christpher Michael Sroka, 21. Soulsby and Sroka were both soldiers at Fort Hood.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined and continues to be investigated by the Killeen Fire and Police Departments.
ORIGINAL STORY: Killeen Fire Department battles apartment fire that destroyed the entire complex on Gray St. during the early morning hours.
The Killeen Fire and Police Departments responded to a report of a structure fire at 1302 N. Gray St. at 12:04am on Friday. Upon their arrival they found the apartment complex engulfed in flames; the residents were evacuated immediately. The fire department responded with six engines and two ambulances along with approximately 50 responders to include command staff. The police department responded with twelve officers to assist the fire department. All responders were attempting to get an accurate account of the residents who had been evacuated from their apartments; four people were still unaccounted. The residents were bussed by the Killeen Fire Department to the Killeen Community Center for temporary shelter and the American Red Cross is working with all those who were displaced.
During the investigation witnesses advised the fire started in apartment #6. Once the fire was put out the fire investigators were able to go through the building and found three deceased people inside the area where the fire was to have started. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced one victim deceased at 6:38am, another victim deceased at 6:39am and the third victim deceased at 7:34am. He also ordered autopsies to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas on all the victims.
