Waco, Texas — The Waco animal shelter euthanized 40 dogs by the end of business on Friday after a possible exposure to a dog who was confirmed to have rabies.
The dog who had rabies was picked up as a stray in Lorena on March 11. It died on March 17, after showing signs of illness. Officials say the female lab/pyrenees mix could have been infected as early as March 6.
According to the state, the shelter either had to euthanize the dogs or vaccinate them and keep them in quarantine for 45 to 90 days.
