Waco man found guilty of arson

A Waco jury has found a Waco man guilty of arson for attempting to set his ex-girlfriend's house on fire.

The trial for William Charles Webb, 29, began after jury selection on Monday.

Webb was arrested in March of 2012 after police reported he was responsible for babysitting an infant. When the mother of the child returned home, she found her infant's blood alcohol level was three times higher than the legal driving limit.

On December 8, Webb was babysitting an infant boy at a North Waco home.

When the baby's mother returned home from work she took the baby to the hospital after noticing he wasn't responding normally and that's when doctors discovered he's blood alcohol level was .291 which led to respiratory failure.

"He tried to explain as the baby was just tired. [The] Mom knew better, so she took him to the hospital. Once they ran some tests, the baby had an alcohol concentration about three and a half times greater than what we would consider intoxicated," said Sgt. Patrick Swanton of Waco P.D.

Webb was then charged with injury to a child and faces an additional charge of making a terroristic threat. Shortly after his Thursday arrest, Webb reportedly posted bond that Saturday and attempted to burn down the victim's house.

So that night he went back to the victims house in the 2200 block of Cumberland to extract his revenge.

"He had been calling, threatening her. He ended up pouring gasoline on the outside of the house, tried to light the gasoline on fire, but due to the rain and wet conditions, he was unable to get the gas to burn," said Swanton.

Police found Webb at his mother's house in the 1800 block of Pine Avenue and took him into custody for the second time.

"He is now charged with retaliation, arson, two counts of criminal mischief and violation of a protective order," said Swanton.

Webb also faces the original charge of injury to a child. The baby survived the incident.
