Waco Police Department is urging citizens to be cautious of a new scammer going around town.

During the last two to three weeks, authorities say they have been told about a man going around taking money in various parts of town. Police report that, "this man goes door to door, and tells the people who live there some sob story about how he got locked out of his house, pop a lock won’t help him, so he needs money. He will claim he is a neighbor down the street, or knows a family member, friend, etc. He will ask for money and usually receive some. The story varies sometimes, and has included a car breaking down, needing gas money, his luggage went missing so he needs some money to buy some clothes, etc. "

The police department says they have received numerous reports of this scammer. And, because people are "voluntarily giving this guy money, there’s not really an offense that has been committed."

Police urge you to be cautious about who you give money to in order to avoid getting scammed.
