Killeen Police Department — A man is in critical condition after leading Killeen police officers on a high speed chase, after committing felony theft in Harker Heights and threatening a Harker Height Police Officer with a shotgun when he was confronted.
On Sunday, December 2 at 2:29 p.m., officers were notified that a felony theft had just occurred at the Sprint Store in Harker Heights. The suspect was described as a white male in his late 20’s, wearing an orange tee shirt and blue jeans. According to the report, he was seen getting into a white Chevy Trailblazer bearing TX license plate AD7364. Killeen police officers were asked to attempt to locate the suspect who, was possibly headed towards an address on Sandstone Drive.
Harker Heights Officers then received a report that the male was possibly living behind the Walmart in Killeen. The officers were checking the area around 1201 Bacon Ranch Road when they located the suspect who was armed with a shotgun. The suspect threatened a Harker Heights officer, and a foot pursuit ensued, involving the Killeen and Harker Heights officers. During the pursuit, the suspect was able to make his way back to his Chevy Trailblazer. The officers then began pursuing the suspect who was known to be armed and dangerous, in his vehicle.
The suspect made his way onto Lowes Boulevard to Walmart Drive, onto Central Texas Expressway, then entering Highway 190 traveling eastbound. The suspect was driving at a high rate of speed and took the Nola Ruth exit. He traveled a short distance on the access road then re-entered the highway, still traveling eastbound. A Nolanville police officer was near the Nolanville Main Street exit when the suspect swerved at the officer causing him to lose control of his vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle began to roll to the north over the eastbound lanes of traffic, through the median and across the westbound traffic, coming to rest in the median between the westbound highway traffic lanes and the westbound access roadway.
The 36-year-old suspect was unconscious and had to be removed from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life. He was airlifted to Scott & White Memorial Hospital in critical condition where he is currently in the Intensive Care Unit.
Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating the crash and information will be released as it becomes available. The name of the suspect has been withheld due to the seriousness of his injuries.
