BRYAN, Tx (KYLE) — Dozens of parents showed up Tuesday night for a public hearing to discuss their concerns and get questions answered about the proposed Bryan ISD high school rezoning plan.
One worried parent asked, "Will students wanting to participate in IB classes be allowed to transfer as a freshman?"
Currently Bryan High is a 5A school and Rudder a 3A.
The school board's goal is to make both schools equal by increasing attendance at Rudder and decreasing enrollment at Bryan.
A move that would not only make both schools 4A according to UIL classifications but also help save the school district around $250,000 dollars.
"We are now being forced, if you will, to look very seriously at our finances," said BISD Superintendent, Dr. Thomas Wallis. "At this point in time, if we can save anything we're doing great."
The new Rudder boundary line would go from Texas Avenue to Sandy Point Road affecting around 300 students and most everyone agrees the move would be beneficial.
"I think that by sharing the resources and activities, it's best for both schools," said Kathy Waskom.
Another added, "I think it'll be good for our community and be good for everybody so it's a win-win across the board."
The school board may make a decision about the proposal as early as next week. If passed, the new boundary lines would go into effect next school year.
