Waco, Tx — After a police chase through Woodway and Waco and a four hour standoff, a wanted Waco man is now in custody.
Christopher Carlos DeLeon, 35, of Waco was arrested early Thursday morning on several charges.
According to Chief Yost Zakhary of the Woodway Police Department, officers noticed a stolen vehicle, that they had received a tip about, in the area around 8257 Shadow Wood Drive in Woodway around 10:50 p.m. Wednesday night. Officers attempted to stop DeLeon, who was driving the vehicle, on Highway 6. DeLeon then reportedly took off on a chase that continued throughout Waco in a nine minute pursuit. The chase ended with DeLeon bailing out of the vehicle, near Richter and Daughtry, and running on foot, into a residence in the 19-hundred block of Howard Street in Waco.
When DeLeon got inside of the home, he allegedly barricaded himself in. DeLeon was also wanted by Waco PD for an Evading Arrest and Driving While License Invalid warrant from an incident occurring on December 21st 2012.
Occupants in the home knew DeLeon and allowed him entry into the house. Officers surrounded the home and were able to remove all occupants, other than DeLeon, who refused to exit the house. Witnesses advised police that Deleon was armed with a handgun. Patrol officers secured the location and called for the SWAT and Negotiation teams to assist. DeLeon refused to talk to negotiators throughout the early morning hours causing the SWAT team to have to use chemical munitions in an attempt to remove him from the home.
"You got to put the blame where the blame lies. Number one, it's on the criminal for not doing the law-abiding thing and turning himself in. But, however, when he put us in the position of having to use chemical munitions, we're going to consider safety first," said Sergeant Patrick Swanton of the Waco Police Department.
SWAT officers made entry into the home and found DeLeon hiding inside of the laundry room. DeLeon allegedly resisted arrest, causing officers to have to taze him. He was taken into custody and transported to McLennan County Jail for the above charges. Deleon now faces additional charges of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Evading Arrest, Aggravated Assault, and Driving While License Invalid.
