Waco, Tx — In Waco, police are on alert after local furniture rental stores have reported a rise in customers failing to make payments.
These customers go to local rental stores, like Aaron's or Rent-A-Center, and sign a contract to rent anything from electronics, to furniture, appliances, and more. Then, for whatever reason, they stop making payments, causing the store to eventually contact police. This type of crime used to be a civil case, but recent legislation has made it a criminal issue.
"This is the potential that can happen to them. It's that they can face criminal charges if they don't take care of their business. You know, our detectives have said we're getting a bunch of these. And, again, our deal is we want you to take care of your business like you said you would," said Waco Police Spokesman Patrick Swanton.
Punishment for theft of service crimes, such as this, can range anywhere from a Class C Misdemeanor to a felony, depending on the value of the items that are not returned.
