Killeen Police Department — The Killeen Police Department was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) on March 27, 2010, at the CALEA Spring Conference in Dallas, Texas. On March 27, 2013, Chief Dennis Baldwin, Commander Margaret Young and Ms. Brenda Potts, appeared before the CALEA Commission in North Charleston, SC, to discuss the department’s reaccreditation. The Commission granted Advanced Reaccreditation to the Killeen Police Department (second award) for the next three years.
“This Advanced Reaccreditation was the result of our community working together to make Killeen a better place to live. Moreover, it helps to maintain the trust our community has placed in the Killeen Police Department moving forward,” said Chief Baldwin.
Accreditation is a voluntary invitation to professional law enforcement assessors from CALEA to examine all aspects of the department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. The team of out-of-state assessors conducted an on-site evaluation of the department December 2-5, 2012, to verify that KPD meets the Commission’s over 480 state-of-the-art standards of proven best management practices. CALEA’s nationally recognized standards are the highest standards in law enforcement. Accreditation insures the department has consistent policies, formalizes management practices and provides for accountability through checks and balances at all levels of the agency.
Accreditation standards provide the Chief of Police a proven management system of written directives, sound training, clearly defined lines of authority, and routine reports that support decision-making and resource allocation. Accreditation provides objective evidence of an agency’s commitment to excellence in leadership, resource management, and service delivery. Accreditation embodies the precepts of community oriented policing. It creates a forum in which police and citizens work together to prevent and control crime
Accreditation is for three years, during which the department must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited. CALEA will re-evaluate the Killeen Police Department after three years with another team of out-of-state CALEA assessors to ensure continued compliance for re-accreditation.
Attaining reaccreditation status represents the Killeen Police Department’s ongoing acceptance of the obligation to continue the quest for professional excellence. The process holds the department accountable and sets the bar for professionalism.
