Waco, Tx — City leaders say a quick, reasonable way to travel isn't being utilized enough, and they are working to change that. The Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce just kicked off a multi hundred thousand dollar campaign to increase traffic at the Waco Regional Airport.
Waco city leaders are hoping a large-scale advertising campaign can bring more service to Waco Regional Airport, which they also anticipate will boost the local economy.
"Virtually every company that we talk to, when they're looking at the greater Waco area to make an investment here, they want to talk to us about air service," said Matthew Meadors, President and CEO of the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce.
Meadors says people seem to either forget about Waco's airport or think flying out of a bigger city, like Dallas is cheaper. So, to get the facts straight, the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce is turning to radio, TV, and billboards to get the word out.
"The value of the campaign is about $145,000, so it's a comprehensive campaign," said Meadors.
The "Fly Waco" campaign is set to run until October. And after that, leaders plan to meet to assess the success of the campaign.
"It's certainly our hope that the campaign will create awareness within our region and our community. And, it's our intent to increase usage," said Meadors.
Back in March, Waco Regional Airport was on the list of airports scheduled to lose their tower. With more traffic, officials say the airport could reiterate its importance in the community.
"It helps when our numbers increase. It also helps when air carriers increase their frequencies," said Joel Martinez, Director of Aviation for the Waco Regional Airport.
Since Continental Airlines stopped servicing the airport last September, American Eagle's number of passengers have increased.
"We've seen them grow 22% from year to date," said Martinez.
And with a successful campaign, those numbers should continue to grow.
