Hewitt, TX — The Hewitt Police Department will soon have a new officer on its force, as Hewitt City Council has approved the department's request for a K9 Unit.
Currently, the PD relies heavily on Woodway and Lorena's K9 Units when they need to conduct drug searches. Hewitt PD says waiting on other departments is time consuming, and their dogs may not always be available. Officials also say having a K9 Unit is essential because there is a rise in narcotics being found during traffic stops.
"We feel because we're running into more and more narcotics on the street, the time was right for us to go ahead and get it (K-9 Unit)," said Hewitt Police Chief Jim Devlin.
The department anticipates purchasing the dog in the near future and having it on the force by year's end.
