Hewitt, TX — Disc golf is a popular activity enjoyed across Central Texas, and in Hewitt, a course has just been completed.
“I never used to wake up early, and now on Saturday mornings at 6 a.m. I’m getting my butt up to go to the disc golf course because I just love it out here," said Douglas Branch, who plays a round of disc golf every day after work.
“I kind of feel like disc golf is my therapy," explained Branch. "I come out here when I have a hard day. I get to throw around until my arm is tired. I get to enjoy a beautiful day out here, crack open a beer if I want one. It’s just relaxing.”
Disc golf is just like regular golf.
There’s a start point and an end point. You’ve only got so many throws to reach the hole, or in disc golf’s case- the basket.
There’s four disc golf courses in the Waco area right now.
A fifth course is opening up in Hewitt next week.
Players say it’s a great way to get outside, enjoy nature, have some fun, and the best part, it’s free.
“Texas has probably close to 400 courses now. And, we’re approaching somewhere near 4,000 worldwide," said Joey Harrell.
Harrell is an original member of the Waco Disc Golf Association and is the designer of the new course.
“The city of Hewitt has been great to work with on the course," said Harrell. "I think over the next few months and the next few years, it’s going to shape up to be a real nice course.”
The grand opening was rained out last week, so they’ve rescheduled it for Saturday, October 5.
Harrell said, “I encourage everybody to come out and see what’s going on. Come participate and give it a try if you’re new to the sport. We’re going to have people out here with discs, and we’re going to show people how to throw. It’s going to be a good time."
