Waco, TX — A teenager that alerted a family that their car was on fire may have been the one who started it before burglarizing their home.
Franco Geovani Navarrette, 17, is being charged with Burglary of a Habitation, Evading Arrest and Possession of Marijuana.
Sgt. Patrick Swanton of Waco PD said Navarette alerted a family at 515 Novelty Street that their minivan parked in the front of the house was on fire.
The family and Navarette then waited in the backyard for firefighters to arrive.
That's when police believe Navarette slipped away, entered the house through the front door and started taking property.
Officers found him down the street later with a TV set, a computer and other stolen items.
He was tasered before being arrested.
“After being in law enforcement for 33 years you think you’d seen it all. But it just never ceases to amaze me what kind of criminal acts that the criminal element can come up with. This crime one was pretty cold and callous," said Swanton.
The Waco Fire Marshall is contemplating whether to file arson charges as well.
