Killeen, Texas (FOX51) — The Killeen Police Department is investigating a Sunday morning shooting in which one person was killed.
Officers received a 911 call on Sunday, around 2:57 a.m., in reference to a burglary in progress at 2316 Zephyr Road. While officers’ were enroute, they were notified that shots were fired at the house.
Upon the officers’ arrival, they located a white male in the backyard suffering from a gunshot wound. The male was immediately taken to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced deceased at 4:30 a.m., by medical authorities.
The gunshot victim was identified as 32-year-old Terry Lee Moon Jr., of Killeen. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.
The preliminary investigation revealed the resident was asleep when his dog started barking and he saw someone coming through his bedroom window. The resident fired his weapon striking the male; he immediately called 911 for officers’ assistance.
The 29-year-old resident was taken to the Killeen City Jail. This case was reviewed by the Bell County District’s Attorney’s Office and a complaint was not returned at this time pending further investigation and the resident was released from custody.
Detectives are continuing the investigation and information will be released as it becomes available.
