Temple, Texas (KWKT) — Due to a recent rise in the theft of copper from homes under construction throughout the City of Temple; Investigators from the Temple Police Department’s General Investigations Unit began to conduct late night surveillance in various construction and developing areas throughout the city.
This morning, at approximately 1:28 a.m., one position reported two suspects had entered a house under construction in the 1700 block of Deerfield Drive. Officers converged on the area and waited for the suspects to exit the structure. When the subjects emerged both were immediately detained by the officers.
The suspects were identified as Michael Allen Perez, a 31-year-old Temple man, and Alexis Marie Ireland, a 26-year -ld Temple woman. Both were found in possession of gloves and flashlights, and Officers also recovered a pair of wire cutters from the ground near the suspect’s location.
Investigators entered the structure to check for damage and found that several wires inside had been cut and attempts made to remove the wiring. However, due to the installation method of the particular wires they could not be pulled from the house, and the suspects were forced to leave the wiring behind.
The case was reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday, and a complaint issued by that office charging Mr. Perez and Ms. Ireland with burglary of a building.
Both suspects will remain in the Bell County Jail pending arraignment.
We would like to congratulate the officers on a successful start to this operation. Additional investigations into the previous copper thefts are still ongoing.
