Waco (KWKT) — The City of Waco has approved an ordinance Tuesday night that will allow citizens to use their lawns to earn extra income.
The ordinance will allow temporary parking on lawns in neighborhoods near events consisting of 5,000 people or more.
The city rule will extend the allowance of parking from the new McLane stadium to the Extraco Event Center building.
During these events property owners will be exempt from current zoning regulations that prohibits parking on unpaved surfaces.
The city will allow parking on lawns as long as the property owners do not block streets.
"We are going to go ahead and allow this by permit but there are restrictions that say we cannot have the streets block or prevent emergency vehicles from coming through." Said Larry Holze, City Representative.
If passed through the final reading, the ordinance will allow residents to use their lawns as a commercial business.
The ordinance first passed a recommendation through the planning commission by a 9-0 vote. Tuesday night, it was approved unanimously in a 6-0 vote during the first reading. The last step for the ordinance is a second reading that will be held on August 5.
