bell county, tx — An elderly woman is out of $2,500 as a result of an IRS phone scam.
Bell County authorities say the victim received a call from someone who claimed to be with the IRS, saying she owed money in back taxes. They say scammer also claimed a warrant would be issued if she didn't pay immediately with a credit or debit card. The woman reportedly purchased prepaid cards and called a 202 area code phone number back to pay the caller.
Officals say no one answered the number when they tried to call. Authorities urge you to never give your information over the phone.
The IRS has issued releases in the past stating they'll never call you to ask for payment. To learn more about other scams done in the name of the IRS or learn how to protect your information, visit this link: http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterates-Warning-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam .
