The first draft proposal for the upcoming state budget says public education funding could be cut by five billion dollars, and colleges and universities may lose more than 770 million dollars.
These cuts could reduce the number of programs, working forces, and benefits which school officials believe will impact a students education. Waco ISD is already looking at ways to deal with issue, such as cutting back on the full day Pre-K program. However, they sill believe that program to be vital to a child's education.
Just last year, schools in the area were already making budget cuts to deal with the recession, but a multi-billion dollar loss has officials worried about the future. They say now is the time to start planning.
While this budget proposal is subject to change, school officials are still worried about what lies ahead.
