Waco, Tx — We've all been warned about drinking and driving, but now Waco area highway officials are emphasizing another message. Don't be distracted while driving. This comes after two large fatality wrecks occurred near the same area on Interstate 35 this month.
"Any accident is one too many," said TxDOT Spokesman Ken Roberts.
A large-scale highway expansion project to provide safer, more efficient travel is proving to be a real roadblock for some motorists along Interstate 35. Thursday's fatality wreck was the second of its kind this month.
“It seems like they keep escalating and getting a little bit more serious crashes over time because the roadway is getting narrower as construction is getting further along," said DPS Trooper, D.L. Wilson.
Wilson says there have been about 20 serious wrecks within the last two years.
Highway safety officials say distracted driving plays a large role in many major accidents on busy highways, like Interstate 35.
“It comes back to each and every individual operator to ensure their own safety," said Roberts.
Because of the hilly landscape in the area, officials say drivers need to stay alert, especially at night.
"Fatigue driving can be worse than drunk driving," said Wilson.
One person's mistake could cost countless others their lives.
“Slow down, get off your phones, give yourself plenty of room, and let's be safe out there."
