Waco, Tx — Do you have what it takes to fly?
73 students from across the region are challenging one another on aviation skills this week in Waco. On Friday, the annual Safety and Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) wrapped up at TSTC. Six colleges from Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi were represented, as students showed off their ability to navigate, land, and identify aircrafts.
Each student hopes to land a spot at the national competition next spring.
"It's good for the human spirit, I think, to compete for things and to win. And also, it's important to lose every once in awhile and you regroup and learn from that," said Region IV National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) SAFECON judge, Jerry Anne Jurenka.
The students participating hope to one obtain jobs ranging from air traffic controllers, commercial and private pilots, and pilots for the armed forces.
