Temple, TX — The Temple Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is activating the Emergency Warming Center Plan starting Friday to provide a temporary warming space for homeless or distressed persons in the city. This decision is based on data from the National Weather Service on predicted nighttime temperatures below freezing with wind chill factors in the low teens and twenties tonight through Sunday morning.
Warming Center locations are:
• Victory Ministries, 305 South 18th Street (men)
• Humble House, 613 South 7th Street (men) (women and children)
Additional resources are available should the current locations meet capacity. The warming centers will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. December 28 and ending December 30, 2012.
Warming centers are possible due to the efforts of the City of Temple Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the not-for-profit Temple Emergency Warming Center Coalition (TEWCC), and the 2-1-1 System.
According to Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator Lonzo Wallace, “The intent of providing warming centers in Temple is to bring people that would normally be out in the elements on an extremely cold evening indoors during the coldest hours of the night. Guests will be provided a warm area for refuge, water, blankets, toilet facilities, and limited hygiene items.”
Once activated, information on warming centers is available by contacting 211.
