Tips to keep your Thanksgiving meal safe from food-borne illnesses

Thanksgiving is a notorious day for stuffing your face with homemade treats but with that comes the risk of food-borne illnesses.
"There have been some very sick people and even deaths caused by turkey dinners on Thanksgiving and Christmas," said Don Plitt with the Brazos County Health Department.
But preventing it is easy.
Just make sure you use multiple cutting boards and utensils to prevent cross-contamination and always make sure your food is cooked thoroughly.
"About 30 percent of the chicken and turkey, really any poultry, coming out of slaughter houses have some salmonella contamination so keep that in mind and make sure it's cooked to 165 degrees," Plitt said
Another easy way to prevent bacteria from spreading is by washing your hands with soap and warm water for about 15-20 seconds.
That may seem like a long time but an easy way to keep track is by singing the alphabet song.
Plitt warns, "Hand sanitizer does not count as a substitute for hand washing."
And what about all those leftovers?
Put them in the fridge as soon as you're done eating because anything left out for more than four hours has been in the danger zone.
Also make sure you gobble up your turkey and pie by next week because leftovers should be thrown out after three to four days.
