An embattled official of the University of Texas System was dismissed Tuesday after writing a letter accusing officials at the "highest levels" of the system and its flagship campus in Austin of suppressing data showing that a growing sum of tuition and taxpayer money is paid to professors and administrators who do little teaching.

Rick O'Donnell, the system's special assistant for research, said in a statement that it was "not my choice to depart."

UT System spokesman Anthony de Bruyn said O'Donnell's departure was effective immediately but declined to comment further.
