The pedestrian killed while attempting to cross traffic on Interstate 35 Sunday evening has been identified.

Authorities say 60-year-old Richard Alan Grates of Waco was killed when an oncoming car struck him as he was trying to cross.

According to Waco Police Department, officers were dispatched to the crash in the 800 block of I-35 in the southbound lanes. Investigation revealed a male pedestrian was attempting to cross the interstate from the north to the south when he was struck by a 2007 Dodge Caliber, traveling south on the interstate.

The driver and his passenger were not injured in the crash. The collision killed the pedestrian immediately. J.P. Villarreal pronounced the victim dead and did not order an autopsy. Crime Scene, Accident Reconstruction, Victim Services, and Waco Fire Department responded to assist Waco PD with the scene.

"Interstate 35 is not a pedestrian walkway. There are established and approved crossings: bridges with sidewalks, pedestrian over passes, roadway over passes. But, pedestrians cannot walk on Interstate 35," said TXDoT Spokesman Ken Roberts.
